Replica Type 21 Flyback: Short Answer
A replica Type 21 flyback is a copy of the Breguet Type XXI, a chronograph built for the French naval air arm. Flyback means the chronograph hand returns to zero and restarts with one push of the reset button. A pilot can time a second leg of a route without stopping the movement first. Replica builds copy the outside of the watch. The movement, the metals and the finish come from a different supply chain.
Where the Type 21 Name Comes From
Breguet delivered the first Type XX chronographs to the French military in 1954. The Type XXI arrived in 1995 as a civilian model. It kept the flyback function and added a date and a 24-hour subdial. Current Type XXI references, such as the 3817, list a 42 mm steel case and an automatic caliber from the 584Q family. Breguet does not publish every internal figure, and the numbers change by reference.
How Flyback Works
A standard chronograph needs three pushes: start, stop, reset. A flyback movement needs two. The first push starts the chronograph. The second push drops the hand to zero and restarts it in the same motion. That matters in a cockpit, where a pilot times legs of a route in sequence. Column-wheel and cam-and-lever designs both support flyback. The parts differ in cost and in the feel of the pusher.
What Changes on a Replica
- Movement: most replica flyback chronographs use an Asian automatic chronograph or a quartz module. Some quartz versions have no true flyback. The pusher resets the hand, but the sequence is electronic.
- Case: 316L steel is common. Gold plating stands in for solid gold.
- Crystal: sapphire is listed on many listings. Mineral glass appears on lower tiers.
- Dial: printed numerals and subdials can sit at the wrong depth. Lume is a known weak point.
- Water resistance: a claim of 50 m or 100 m means little unless the case was tested to ISO 22810.
- Caseback and serial: copying these markings is what makes the item counterfeit under US law.
Legal Status in the United States
Replica watches that carry a protected brand name or logo are counterfeit goods. Trafficking in them is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments, and the buyer can lose the goods and the money. Breguet holds the Type XX and Type XXI names and the related trade dress.
Checks Before You Buy
- Ask which movement is inside and whether the flyback is mechanical or simulated.
- Request photos of the actual watch, not catalog images.
- Get the return window in writing.
- Check the payment method. Major card networks treat counterfeit sales as prohibited.
Unknown: no public registry tracks replica Type XXI production volumes. Any count a seller quotes cannot be verified.
