"Hand wrapped" is not a term IWC uses. Two things sit behind the phrase: hand-wound movements and hand-stitched leather straps. Sellers of replica Portofino watches use it for both, so a buyer has to work out which one a listing means before paying.

Where the Phrase Comes From

IWC named the Portofino line in 1984 after the Italian coastal village. The line runs from 37 mm to 45 mm across its references. Two models drive the confusion.

The Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days (ref. IW5101) winds by hand. A shopper who reads "hand wound" and repeats it as "hand wrapped" produces the search term.

The other source is the strap. IWC fits Santoni leather straps to several Portofino references. Santoni finishes leather by hand, including hand-stitched edges. A listing that says "hand wrapped" may mean the strap was cut and sewn by hand instead of by machine.

Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days: Reference Points

  • Caliber 59210, made in-house by IWC.
  • Power reserve: 192 hours, or eight days.
  • Case: 45 mm on most references.
  • Frequency: 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz.
  • Date at 3 o'clock. Small seconds at 9 o'clock.
  • Power reserve display sits on the movement side, visible through the case back.

The Portofino Automatic is the other common base for replicas. Ref. IW3565, 40 mm, caliber 35111, 42-hour power reserve. The Portofino Chronograph uses ref. IW3910.

Hand-Wrapped Straps on Replicas

Replica Portofino watches ship with straps in three grades.

  1. Machine-stitched split leather. Edges sealed with paint. Stitch spacing is uniform.
  2. Machine-stitched calf with a stamped grain. The grain pattern repeats at a fixed interval.
  3. Hand-cut and hand-stitched calf or alligator. Stitch spacing varies by a fraction of a millimeter. Edges are burnished, not painted.

A hand-wrapped strap adds cost. That shows in the price and in the photos. Ask for one photo of the strap edge and one of the strap back at the lug end.

What to Check in a Listing

  • Reference number. IW3565, IW5101, IW3910. A listing with no reference number gives the buyer no spec to compare.
  • Case size in millimeters.
  • Movement type. Replica Portofino watches use Chinese or Japanese movements. A hand-wound replica and an automatic replica are different products.
  • Strap construction. State whether the strap is hand-stitched, and name the leather.
  • Return window, in days.

Limits

A replica is not made by IWC. It carries no IWC warranty, no IWC service, and no parts from the IWC supply chain. Resale value is close to zero. Water resistance figures on replicas come from the seller, not from a test standard. A hand-wrapped strap can outlast the movement inside the case.
