A replica Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer copies the case, dial, and bracelet of the original. It does not carry METAS certification. Omega sells a Master Chronometer with a numbered certificate tied to one cased watch. Replica factories do not submit watches to METAS, and no replica movement passes the eight METAS tests.
What Co-Axial means
George Daniels designed the Co-Axial escapement. Omega put it into a series watch in 1999 with the Calibre 2500. A standard Swiss lever escapement pushes pallet stones across the escape wheel teeth. A Co-Axial escapement adds a third level and splits the locking and impulse functions. Less sliding friction reaches the escape wheel. Omega states the design lowers friction and holds rate over longer service intervals.
What Master Chronometer means
Omega introduced Master Chronometer certification in 2015. The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) tests a complete cased watch, not a loose movement. Eight tests run over 10 days. They cover:
- Function with and without power in the movement
- Daily rate deviation
- Rate in six positions
- Rate after exposure to a 15,000 gauss magnetic field
- Rate at two temperatures
- Rate at full power and at one third power
- Rate on the wrist, measured on the watch itself
- Water resistance
The pass mark is 0 to +5 seconds per day for the cased watch. Each certified watch gets a unique eight digit code. METAS and Omega both record that code against one movement.
Movements inside replica versions
Most replica Omega watches run common third party automatic movements. Names that appear on spec sheets include the Seiko NH35, the Miyota 8215, the Miyota 9015, and ETA 2824 clones built in China, such as the Seagull ST2130 and the Hangzhou 6460. Some sellers decorate the rotor with Omega style text and a Co-Axial engraving. The engraving is cosmetic. A Seiko NH35 has 24 jewels and about 41 hours of power reserve. Omega lists 55 hours for the Calibre 8900. A steel hairspring cannot hold rate inside a 15,000 gauss field, so the magnetic test fails before any other check.
Claim checks before you buy
- Ask for the eight digit METAS code. It resolves to one watch, not a batch.
- 15,000 gauss resistance needs a silicon hairspring or a non magnetic escapement.
- Look at the balance. A true Co-Axial assembly shows a three level wheel, not a standard lever.
- Price sets a floor. A cased and certified Master Chronometer movement costs more than most complete replica watches.
The Co-Axial name and the Master Chronometer name are trademarks of Omega SA. Buyers who want Co-Axial geometry and METAS accuracy buy the certified watch. Replicas trade that certification for a lower price.
