What a replica IW545176 is
IW545176 is an IWC reference number. The "IW" prefix is IWC Schaffhausen's own code for its references. A replica of that reference is a watch built by a third party to look like the original. It holds no IWC parts, no IWC movement, and no IWC warranty.
IWC does not list every past reference on its public site. If you cannot find an official spec sheet for IW545176, then the numbers in the seller's listing are the only numbers you have. Treat them as unverified until you measure the watch yourself.
Price bands
- Replica sellers: $150 to $600 for a hand-wound or automatic copy.
- Used genuine IWC Portugieser hand-wound watches: about $5,000 to $13,000 at auction and on the secondary market, based on published sale results.
The gap is the point. A $300 copy is not a discount on a $9,000 watch. It is a different object with a different movement and no factory history.
Movement
Most copies of hand-wound Portugieser-style references use an Asian 6497 or 6498 clone. These are real mechanical movements. They run at 18,000 vph or 21,600 vph depending on the version. Power reserve is about 40 to 46 hours. The genuine watch uses an in-house IWC caliber with a longer power reserve and a different finishing standard.
A decorated bridge or a printed logo on the movement does not change what the movement is. Ask for a photo of the actual movement in the actual watch.
Case and dial details
- Case size on copies is listed at 43 mm to 44 mm. Measure yours. Sellers round numbers.
- Crystal: sapphire on the better copies, mineral glass on cheap ones. Mineral glass scratches with daily wear.
- Dial: applied numerals on the better copies, printed numerals on the cheap ones.
- Water resistance: claims of 30 m to 50 m are common. Gaskets on copies are not pressure tested. Do not swim with one.
US legal status
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment under 19 U.S.C. Section 1305. Trafficking in counterfeit goods carries criminal penalties under 18 U.S.C. Section 2320. Personal-use buying sits at lower risk than resale, but the parcel can still be seized and destroyed, and you lose the money.
Service and parts
IWC will not service a counterfeit. Independent watchmakers will, at $80 to $200 for a clean and oil on a 6497-type movement. Parts are generic and sourced from movement suppliers. Crystal replacements come from aftermarket sellers, not from IWC.
Checks before you buy
- Ask for a photo of the caseback showing the reference and serial.
- Ask for a movement photo. Reject stock images.
- Ask for a measured case diameter with calipers, not the listed one.
- Ask who pays if customs seizes the parcel.
- Ask the movement model number in writing.
