Short answer
IW376053 is an IWC Schaffhausen reference from the Aquatimer Chronograph line. Replica versions of this reference are sold online. They copy the case shape, dial layout, and strap. They do not use an IWC movement. IWC does not service them. Import into the United States can be seized.
What the reference is
IWC builds the Aquatimer line for diving. Published family specs list a steel case near 44 mm, water resistance to 300 m, a sapphire crystal, and calibre 79320 with a 44-hour power reserve when fully wound. The chronograph module sits on a Valjoux 7750 base. Dial, bezel, and strap variants change by reference number, so IW376053 is one configuration inside a larger family. IWC does not list every discontinued reference on its current site. Confirm the exact catalog entry through an IWC boutique or archived press material.
What replicas copy
- Case diameter and lug width, within about 1 mm of the original.
- Dial print and subdial positions at 12, 6, and 9 o'clock.
- Date window at 3 o'clock.
- Rubber strap texture and steel bracelet clasp shape.
Where replicas diverge
- Movement. Copies use Asian automatic chronographs, in some cases an ETA 7750 clone. Beat rate reads 28,800 vph like the original. Rotor engraving, finishing, and timekeeping differ.
- Case finishing. Brushed and polished edges on the original are crisp. Copy cases show rounded edges and wider caseback gaps.
- Water resistance. IWC pressure tests each watch to 300 m. Copies are not tested. Gasket material varies by batch. Do not swim with one.
- Crystal and lume. Copy sapphire may lack anti-reflective coating on the inner face. Lume glow drops off in 1 to 2 hours.
- Weight. A steel copy runs 10 to 20 g lighter than the original. Thinner caseback and hollow bracelet links account for the gap.
Servicing and parts
IWC service centers refuse counterfeit watches and do not return them. Independent watchmakers can service a 7750 clone when generic parts are in stock. Parts made for the copy case, dial, and hands are not carried by Swatch Group distributors. A broken pusher or stripped crown tube can end the watch's life.
Legal status in the United States
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years; repeat offenses reach 20 years. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry, including single-item personal imports. IWC and Aquatimer are trademarks of IWC Schaffhausen. Reselling a copy as genuine adds fraud exposure on top of the counterfeit statute.
What to check on a physical watch
Check crown action. Check chronograph pusher resistance. Check inner bezel rotation. Check caseback engraving depth. Check serial number placement. Genuine IWC serials sit on the caseback and match the paperwork. Copy serials repeat across many units in the same batch.
