Short answer

No Omega model is named Hippocampus. Hippocampus is the seahorse emblem stamped on the caseback of Omega Seamaster watches. A replica hippocampus 2015 is a counterfeit Seamaster sold in or near 2015. The phrase appears in dealer listings and forum posts. It does not appear in Omega catalogs.

What the 2015 date points to

Three Seamaster lines held most of the replica market that year.

  • Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial. 41 mm case, ceramic bezel with Liquidmetal scale, calibre 8400, 25,200 vph, 60 hours of power reserve. Omega released it in 2014.
  • Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Master Co-Axial. 41.5 mm and 38.5 mm cases, calibre 8500, rated to 15,000 gauss.
  • Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition. 7,007 pieces, 41 mm, no date, lollipop seconds hand, NATO strap. Omega announced it in 2015 with the film Spectre.

Spectre replicas reached sellers in late 2015 and early 2016.

Movement tells

Genuine Master Co-Axial calibres run at 25,200 vph, or 7 beats per second. Most 2015 replicas carried an ETA 2824 clone or a Sea-Gull ST2130, both at 28,800 vph. A seconds hand that ticks 8 times per second points to the clone.

Other checks:

  • Rotor engraving. Replica rotors from 2015 used printed or shallow etched text. Genuine rotors are engraved and rhodium plated.
  • Bridge shape. The 8400 and 8500 have a double barrel bridge. Clone movements hide the shape under a decorative plate.
  • Jewels. The genuine 8400 lists 39 jewels. A 2824 clone has 25.
  • Power reserve. Genuine, 60 hours. Clone 2824, about 38 hours.

Case, bezel, dial

  • Case width. The Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial measures 41 mm. Early replicas measured 41.5 mm to 42 mm.
  • Lug width. 21 mm on the Seamaster 300. Many replicas shipped 20 mm or 22 mm spring bars.
  • Bezel. The Liquidmetal fill on a genuine piece sits flush with the ceramic. Replica fill sits high and catches light. Some 2015 replicas used painted markers that faded.
  • Caseback. The hippocampus sits in relief on genuine pieces. Replicas used laser etching with flat edges.
  • Crystal. Genuine sapphire has anti-reflective coating on both faces. Most 2015 replicas coated the outside only, so the dial washed out at angles.
  • Lume. Super-LumiNova on the Seamaster 300 glows blue-green for hours. Replicas of that year used a greener compound with a short glow.

Factories active in 2015

Noob, V6F, KW, BP, and TF built Seamaster replicas in this period. Noob and V6F held the top tier. Prices ran from $250 to $450. Watches listed under $120 used a DG2813 movement and a mineral crystal.

Checks before buying

  1. Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback open.
  2. Measure the case. 41 mm, not 42.
  3. Check the crown guards. Guards on a genuine Seamaster 300 sit flush with the mid-case.
  4. Confirm the lug width. 21 mm.
  5. Ask if the seller pressure tested the watch. Most do not. Do not swim with an untested replica.
  6. Compare the date window. The Spectre piece has no date.

Limits

A replica is not a genuine Omega. It carries no Omega warranty and no service support. United States customs can seize counterfeit goods under 19 U.S.C. 1526. Serial numbers on replicas do not match any Omega record.
