What the reference number tells you
Blancpain 5050-11A0-52B sits in the Fifty Fathoms line. The first four digits, 5050, point to the Grande Date model. The suffix covers case metal, dial color, and strap. The 52B group is a strap or bracelet code. Blancpain does not publish a full public decoder for every suffix, so the exact metal and dial configuration for this reference should be confirmed with the brand or a dealer before you compare any replica against it.
No factory publishes an official spec sheet for its replica. Two batches from the same factory can differ. Treat every claim from a seller as unverified until you see photos of the actual watch.
Case and bezel checks
Grande Date Fifty Fathoms cases run about 45 mm across. Measure the replica with calipers. Record lug-to-lug, thickness, and lug width. A 1 mm error in thickness shows on the wrist and under a shirt cuff.
Turn the bezel. The original indexes in one direction with firm detents and no back play. Cheap replicas show wobble, soft clicks, and markers that sit off center at 12. Check that the bezel insert aligns with the dial chapter ring.
Dial, hands, and date
The Grande Date name refers to the two-window date display. On low-grade replicas the two date wheels sit at different depths and the gap between windows is uneven. Print quality is the fastest tell. Look at the dial text and the depth rating under 10x magnification. Sharp edges mean a pad-printed or applied marker set. Fuzzed edges mean a decal.
Lume is another check. Charge the dial with a phone light for 30 seconds and compare brightness across the markers. Uneven glow points to cheap paint, not a lume compound.
Movement
Most replicas of this reference use an automatic movement from a Chinese or Japanese supplier. Clone rotors copy the engraving of the Blancpain caliber. Engraving proves nothing. Test function instead:
- Hack the seconds hand and set the time. A movement that will not hack is a low tier unit.
- Wind it by hand. Grit or a rough crown thread points to poor assembly.
- Time it over 24 hours in three positions. A rate past plus or minus 20 seconds per day needs a service.
- Listen at 28,800 vibrations per hour, which is 8 beats per second. A slow sweep signals a cheaper beat rate.
What a replica cannot match
The original runs an in-house Blancpain caliber with finishing that no replica factory reproduces. ISO 6425 sets the test criteria for divers' watches, including a 100 m minimum water rating plus pressure, thermal, and shock tests. Replicas carry no such certification. Any depth rating printed on a replica is a claim, not a test result. Salt water and steam will find every weak gasket.
Red flags
- Stock factory photos instead of shots of the actual watch.
- No caseback, serial, or movement photos.
- Water resistance claimed above 50 m with no test sheet.
- A price far under the batch norm for that factory.
- Payment by wire or crypto only, with no refund path.
