Short answer
Nearly every watch sold as a fake Speedmaster Cal. 321 copies the outside and fakes the inside. The real caliber 321 is a manual-wind, column-wheel chronograph with a horizontal clutch running at 18,000 vph. Replica factories build the case and dial from photos, then drop in a Seagull ST19, a Lemania-type 861 clone, or an Asian 7750. The movement is where the watch falls apart under inspection, and the case and dial details confirm it.
What the genuine caliber 321 is
- Manual wind. There is no rotor and no automatic winding module.
- Column wheel with a horizontal clutch, the architecture Omega borrowed from Lemania.
- 18,000 vph, 17 jewels, a slower sweep at 5 beats per second.
- Tricompax dial: running seconds at 9 o'clock, 30-minute counter at 3, 12-hour counter at 6.
- No date window, no co-axial escapement, no chronometer text on vintage pieces.
Omega built the caliber 321 from 1957 until 1968, when the caliber 861 replaced it. The company brought it back in 2019 with a sapphire display back. A 321 Speedmaster is therefore either a vintage watch with a solid steel back, or a modern revival with a display back and a current reference number. Nothing sits in between.
Prerequisites
- A 10x loupe.
- A phone with macro mode or a clip-on macro lens.
- Bright angled light, best from a small LED.
- Calipers for case and lug measurements.
- A reference list of correct case back engravings and serial ranges.
Inspection procedure
- Turn the watch over. If a vintage-cased 321 has a transparent case back, stop. No vintage 321 came with one.
- Check for a rotor through the display back on modern revival clones. A rotor means it is not a 321.
- Count the beats. Hold the watch to your ear or use a timegrapher app. A 321 ticks 5 times per second, an ST19 ticks 6, and a 7750 ticks 8.
- Look at the subdial positions. Genuine is 3, 6, 9. Plenty of fakes use a 12, 6, 9 layout because that is what a 7750 chronograph module gives them.
- Look for a date window at 3 or 4:30. The 321 has none, so a date is an instant fail.
- Check the bezel. Early 321 Speedmasters use the dot over ninety scale. Fakes print a base-1000 scale on a flat insert instead.
- Test the lume. Genuine tritium from the 1960s does not glow. A fake that lights up under UV is using modern luminous paint with an aged color.
- Feel the pushers and crown. Genuine pump pushers have a short crisp travel. A 7750-based fake feels stiff and long, and the crown turns with grit.
- Inspect the case back engraving with the loupe. Check the depth, the font of the reference and serial, and the placement of the hippocampus.
- Measure the case. Compare against the published spec for that reference, since fakes run about 1 mm off and the lugs sit thicker.
Movement tells in detail
Open the case back on a modern revival or a claimed new 321 and you will see one of four things. A Seagull ST19 with a plain finish and a stamped balance cock. A 7750 with a rotor, a wobble, and a date mechanism. A Lemania-derived 861 or 1861 with the wrong bridge shape, which is not a 321 even though it looks close. Or a quartz module in the cheapest replicas, which shows in the jumping seconds hand. A real 321 shows a column wheel at the top of the movement, a horizontal clutch beside it, and proper finishing under a signed bridge.
Reference numbers to know
Caliber 321 Speedmasters run through references 2915, 2998, 105.002, 105.003 and 145.012. The 105.003 is the Ed White reference worn on the first American spacewalk. The 145.012 was the last Speedmaster to carry the caliber 321 before the 861 arrived in 1968. A seller who cannot name the reference, or who lists an 861 reference as a 321, has told you what you need to know.
Buying notes
Vintage 321 Speedmasters trade in the tens of thousands of dollars, and the 2019 revival starts around fourteen thousand on the secondary market. A 321 priced in the hundreds is a replica, whatever the listing title says. If the seller will not send a clear macro photo of the movement and the case back engraving, walk away. For replica buyers who know what they are getting, the honest framing is this: no current replica reproduces the caliber 321 architecture at genuine spec. You are buying the look of a Speedmaster, not a 321.
