The short answer
A fake Rolex Day-Date is a replica of the Rolex Day-Date, reference 128238 at 36 mm or 228238 at 40 mm. Rolex builds the Day-Date in 18k yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold, or platinum. No steel version exists. Replica makers use 316L or 904L steel with gold plating, gold wrap, or solid gold parts. Prices run from about $60 to $900. Movement type, case metal, and dial print separate the tiers.
What the genuine watch does
Rolex launched the Day-Date in 1956. It was the first wristwatch that spelled out the day of the week in full. The day window sits at 12 o'clock. The date window sits at 3 o'clock under a Cyclops lens. The President bracelet uses three semi-circular links per row and closes with a hidden Crownclasp. Current models use calibre 3255, a 70-hour power reserve, and a -2/+2 second per day rating. The balance runs at 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Movement tiers in replicas
Replica Day-Dates ship with one of four movement families.
- Quartz: $60 to $120. Stepping seconds hand. Battery swap each year.
- DG2813 or Miyota 8205: $150 to $350. 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3 Hz.
- ETA clone 2836-2: $300 to $500. 28,800 vibrations per hour.
- Clone 3255 sold as SA3255 or SH3255: $500 to $900. Rotor and bridge engraving that copies the Rolex layout.
None of those movements carry the Chronergy escapement. The day and date change mechanism differs from the Rolex part on every tier.
Case weight and metal
Gold density is 19.3 g per cubic centimeter. Tungsten alloy sits at 19.25. Steel sits at 8.0. A solid gold Day-Date 40 weighs close to 200 g with the bracelet. A steel replica weighs 110 g to 150 g. High-tier replicas add a tungsten ring or a tungsten caseback to reach 180 g. That mass changes how the watch sits on the wrist.
Dial and case checks
- Day disc: at 12 o'clock. Cheap builds show a day that sits off center or shows two days in one window.
- Date font: Rolex uses an open 4 and a flat-top 3. Older replicas use a closed 4.
- Cyclops: 2.5x magnification on the genuine lens, with anti-reflective coating on recent examples.
- Rehaut: the word ROLEX repeats around the inner ring, with the serial at 6 o'clock.
- Caseback: solid on the genuine watch. A display back is not a Rolex part.
Legal status in the United States
18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. A second offense carries up to 20 years. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry and destroys them. Rolex files civil suits against sellers and domain owners. A seized parcel is not returned and the buyer gets no refund.
