Quick answer

A fake Rolex ceramic bezel is a bezel insert built to copy Cerachrom, the ceramic insert Rolex uses on the Submariner, GMT-Master II, Daytona, and Yacht-Master. Good replicas use sintered zirconium oxide. Cheap ones use printed aluminum, steel, or resin with a clear coat. You can tell the two apart with a magnet, a loupe, and a tap test.

What Cerachrom is

Rolex put the first Cerachrom bezel on the GMT-Master II in 2005. The insert starts as zirconium oxide powder mixed with pigment and a binder. The powder is pressed into a mold and fired at about 1,600 °C. The fired part is hard, so shaping happens with diamond tools. Numerals are etched, then filled with platinum or gold by physical vapor deposition.

Zirconia sits near 8 on the Mohs scale. It does not fade under UV light. It is not magnetic.

What replica bezels use

  • Printed insert. Aluminum or steel disc, ink numerals, clear lacquer. Color looks flat. Ink wears at the edges.
  • Resin or coated metal. Plastic insert or metal with a ceramic spray coat. Chips show white plastic under the surface.
  • Sintered zirconia. Same base material as Cerachrom. Pigment blend, polish, and numeral filling set the quality apart.
  • Top tier. Molded and fired zirconia, machined after firing, numerals filled with platinum or gold. Closest match in color and depth.

How to check a bezel insert

  1. Hold a magnet near the insert. Ceramic does not pull. Steel inserts do.
  2. Tap the insert with a plastic pen cap. Ceramic gives a short, high click. Metal rings longer. Resin sounds dull.
  3. Look at the numerals at 10x. Metal filling sits flush. Paint shows pooling and raised edges.
  4. Check the lume pip at 12. On a real insert it sits flush in a capsule. Replicas often use a domed dot that stands above the surface.
  5. Turn the bezel. A GMT-Master II has 24 positions. A Submariner has 120. Back play and a loose ring point to a low tier build.
  6. Compare color in daylight and under LED. Cerachrom pigment holds. Printed inserts shift toward brown or purple.

Weight and price

A zirconia insert for a 40 mm Submariner weighs about 2 to 3 grams. A steel insert with print weighs more. Replica watches with a zirconia insert sell for about $150 to $500. A used genuine Cerachrom insert runs $300 to $900 at parts dealers, when one is listed. Rolex service replaces the bezel as part of the watch, not as a loose part.

Care

Ceramic resists scratches. It chips on impact. Tile floors, door frames, and car doors are the common causes. Clean the insert with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Skip polishing compound and abrasive pads. A chip cannot be polished out. The insert has to be replaced.

Legal note

In the United States, 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches and parts at ports of entry. Buyers also face seizure with no refund.
