The short answer

"Ladybird" is a nickname used in the watch trade for the Rolex Lady-Datejust. The name covers 26 mm, 28 mm and 31 mm cases. "Mother of pearl" is nacre, the inner layer of an oyster or mussel shell. A fake ladybird mother of pearl watch is a replica Lady-Datejust with a dial cut from shell. The dial is the part buyers check first. It is also the part replica makers get wrong most often.

What mother of pearl is

Nacre is a composite. It holds aragonite platelets in a protein matrix. Each platelet measures about 0.5 micrometres. Light passes through the layers and reflects from each boundary. That is why the surface shifts color as the wrist moves.

Grain matters. Natural shell shows irregular grain that follows growth lines. A printed or plastic dial shows a fixed pattern that repeats. Under a 10x loupe the difference is clear.

How replica dials are made

  • Shell veneer. A thin slice of real nacre is glued to a brass or plastic base. Cost is low. Edges can lift after a year.
  • Coated plastic. A printed film copies the swirl. Weight, sound and heat transfer differ from stone.
  • Composite sheet. Ground shell mixed with resin. Color is flat. Growth lines are absent.

Genuine dials are cut from one shell. The maker matches tone to case metal. Rose gold cases get a warm, pink dial. Steel cases get a cooler, grey dial.

Points to check

  1. Hour markers. Cases at 26 mm and 28 mm use smaller markers than the 31 mm. Marker length must reach the minute track.
  2. Date window. It sits at 3 o'clock. The aperture edge is cut, not stamped.
  3. Cyclops lens. Magnification is 2.5x on the crystal. A weak lens is a common fault.
  4. Lume. Mother of pearl dials carry no lume. Dots that glow on a pearl dial are wrong.
  5. Edge. Run a fingernail around the dial rim. Real shell sits flush. Veneer catches.

Care

Nacre is soft. Mohs hardness is about 3.5. A steel bracelet will scratch it. Keep the dial away from perfume, chlorine and hot water. Water enters a case with worn gaskets and leaves marks that cannot be polished out. Service gaskets every two years.

Legal note

Rolex owns the trademark and the name Lady-Datejust. Selling a watch with that name and logo is a trademark offence in the US and the EU. Buying one for personal use is not a crime in most jurisdictions. Customs can seize the item at the border.
