A fake IW329091 fails four checks: caseback engraving, crown threads, movement finish, and dial printing. Run them in that order before money changes hands. Price and paperwork come last, because both are easy to fake.
What the Reference Number Means
IW329091 is an IWC reference. The IW prefix is fixed. The first four digits, 3290, identify the model family, the Pilot's Watch Automatic 41 line. The remaining digits identify the dial, case metal, and strap combination inside that family.
IWC assigns one reference per configuration. A steel case on leather and the same case on a bracelet carry different numbers. IWC publishes no public archive page for every past reference. Confirm the dial and movement for a specific IW329091 with an IWC boutique or service center, not with the seller's listing. Production runs changed dial text and movements over time.
Check 1: Caseback and Serial
Genuine engraving has depth and a machined edge. Printed or shallow laser marking is a replica trait. The caseback carries the reference number and a case serial. The serial is a separate number from the reference and belongs to one watch.
Replicas repeat one serial across many units. Search the serial you are shown. If the same number appears on two listings, both are suspect. Compare the caseback reference with the warranty card and the IWC digital passport. A mismatch ends the deal.
Check 2: Movement
Open the caseback only with the owner's consent, or ask for macro photos under bright light. Genuine IWC automatic movements show Geneva stripes, blued screws, and a signed rotor. Clone movements show coarse perlage, shallow rotor text, and loose finishing on the bridges.
Tilt the watch near your ear. A rotor that rattles is a replica trait. A genuine rotor turns with a soft, damped feel and no play in the bearing.
Check 3: Crown, Crystal, Case
The crown is screw-down. Turn it counterclockwise: it should release, then thread back over several full turns. Replicas use fewer threads. The crown catches, or it cross-threads.
The crystal is sapphire. A drop of water beads on sapphire and spreads on mineral glass. Genuine sapphire carries anti-reflective coating on the inner face. Under a lamp that coating shows a faint blue or purple tint instead of mirror glare.
Measure the case with calipers. The 41 mm family case measures 41 mm across, excluding the crown. Replicas measure 0.5 mm to 1 mm off in many cases, and the case flanks look thicker from the side.
Check 4: Dial and Printing
Use a 10x loupe. Genuine dial text has sharp edges and even stroke width. The date window sits centered under its aperture, and the date disc lines up with the window. Replicas show a leaning date, uneven lume plots, and painted text that bleeds at the edges.
Price and Paperwork
A price far under the market range for the reference is the strongest single signal. Box, card, and manual prove nothing alone. Meet at a boutique or an independent watchmaker. Request a movement photo and the original purchase receipt. Pay after the check, not before.
