Short answer
A fake Cartier Crash 2022 is a counterfeit of the gold Crash that Cartier released in 2022. Cartier built that watch in 18k gold with a bent, asymmetric case and a hand-wound movement. Replica listings run from about $300 to $1,500. They copy the case shape, not the metal or the movement. The real watch is heavier, has deeper engraving, and uses a Cartier calibre inside.
What the real 2022 Crash is
The first Crash came from Cartier London in 1967. The case is a deformed oval, about 43 mm long and about 23 mm wide. Roman numerals on the dial stretch with the shape. Cartier released a new Crash in 2022 in yellow gold, with a sapphire crystal and an alligator strap. Cartier does not publish unit counts for the Crash, so public records on the 2022 run are thin.
Spec sheets list a hand-wound Cartier movement. The gold is 750/1000, which is 18k. Cartier fits a cabochon to the crown on most gold references. Dial text reads "Cartier" and "Swiss Made".
Where fakes appear
Replica listings turn up on dealer sites, forums, and social media. Sellers label them "Crash 2022" or "Crash gold". Some write "18k gold plated". Others claim solid gold and ship steel. Photo sets get reused across sellers, so one set of images proves nothing.
Checks that separate real from fake
- Case shape: the real case bends. Copies use a straight oval and print a bent dial onto it.
- Weight: 18k gold is dense. A plated brass or steel copy feels light in the hand.
- Dial print: letter spacing on "Cartier" and the numerals is fine on the real dial. Copies show thick paint and uneven gaps.
- Secret signature: Cartier puts a second signature inside a numeral on the dial. Many copies leave it out.
- Crown: the stone sits in a gold collar. Copies use glass or a plain ball.
- Movement: real watches use a Cartier calibre with engraving and a calibre number. Copies use a generic movement with no marking.
- Case back: engraving on the real back is deep. Reference and serial numbers are unique. Copies repeat the same numbers across units.
- Papers: a real 2022 Crash comes with a Cartier warranty card that matches the case numbers.
Price context
Cartier did not price the 2022 Crash as a mass-market watch. Retail sat in the tens of thousands of dollars. Secondary prices ran higher. Auction houses, including Phillips and Sotheby's, have sold vintage Crash watches in the six figures. A $400 listing cannot be the same object.
What a guide cannot settle
Photos do not prove gold content or movement. Only a watchmaker with the watch in hand can test the case metal and open the back. On the 2022 Crash, the case shape is the first check and the movement is the last. If a seller refuses an inspection, treat the watch as unknown.
