Short answer
A fake Breguet Classique 4601 copies four Breguet codes: a fluted caseband, a guilloché dial, blued steel hands with eccentric tips, and a secret signature. Replica versions differ most in the engine-turned pattern, the hand shape under macro, and the case finish at the lugs. Ask for macro photos before you judge a listing.
House codes the design uses
- Caseband: a coined edge. Flat grooves run around the middle of the case, and the bezel sits thin above it.
- Lugs: welded to the case, not stamped as part of one shell. The profile is slim and the spring bars sit close to the case.
- Crown: a sapphire cabochon set into the crown at 3 o'clock on many references.
- Dial: a gold base with guilloché, Roman numerals, and a chapter of thin printed divisions.
- Hands: blued steel, with a ring or moon tip on the minute hand and a needle on the seconds hand.
- Signature: the Breguet script on the dial, plus a secret signature etched into the guilloché. It shows at an angle and fades under direct light.
Guilloché is the hard part
Breguet cuts dial patterns on a rose engine, one line at a time. Patterns on the Classique line include clous de Paris, panier, and soleil. A rose-engine cut leaves a crisp edge and a bright line under raking light. Replica dials use stamped or laser-cut patterns. On a stamped dial the lines look soft at 4x to 10x, and groove depth is even across the surface. On a laser-cut dial the grooves show a burn edge.

Check one zone: the arc between the center and the Roman numerals. Hand engraving holds even spacing where the pattern curves. Stamped copies drift and show a flat patch near the edge.

Hands and numerals
Breguet hands are blued steel, thin, and open at the tip. The minute hand carries a ring with a small eccentric point. Replica hands run thick at the base, and the ring is closed or too small. Roman numerals on the Classique line sit upright in a serif face close to Didot. Crooked numeral spacing shows on a straight-on photo.

Checks on seller photos
- Macro at 5x of the dial center and the chapter ring. Look for line softness.
- Side view of the case. The coined edge should be cut, not molded.
- Caseback: reference and serial numbers engraved, plus metal hallmarks.
- Hand tips against a dark background, to see the ring shape.
- Crown from the top, to check the cabochon.
- Caliper readings: diameter, thickness, lug width. Ask for numbers, not claims.
What is not certain
Breguet sells several Classique references, and sellers apply the number 4601 to more than one variant. Confirm the metal, dial color, diameter, and any complication against Breguet's own listing before you compare photos. A replica will not carry a hand-engraved rose-engine dial, and the gold content and movement will differ from the original. Treat the price as a signal of what the parts are.
