Short answer

Audemars Piguet does not publish a watch under the reference 205. The reference numbers that appear in AP catalogues and in auction archives carry four to six digits. The Royal Oak line begins at 5402ST. Listings that use "ref 205" are seller labels, not factory codes. Ask for a caseback photo and a movement photo before you accept any number as an AP reference.

What sits on a caseback

Vintage AP watches carry two engravings: a reference number and a serial number. The reference identifies the model and the metal. On the Royal Oak 5402ST, the letters ST mean stainless steel. The serial identifies one watch. Both marks are struck on the caseback, and on older pieces the engraving sits on the inner face. A counterfeit caseback shows a laser cut with even depth and no tool marks. A genuine vintage engraving shows a cut with varied depth and a slight burr at the edge.

How replica AP watches are built

  • Cases: 316L stainless steel, tungsten, or brass with gold plating. AP uses 316L stainless, 18k gold, titanium, or ceramic, depending on the model.
  • Movements: Chinese-made clones, often decorated copies of an ETA 2824 or a Miyota 9015. The Royal Oak Jumbo uses calibre 2121. Current Royal Oaks use calibre 4302.
  • Dials: printed squares that imitate the tapisserie pattern. The genuine dial is stamped and milled. Date fonts on replicas run wide, and the date window sits off-center.
  • Caseback screws: the Royal Oak uses eight screws. On a genuine case they sit flush and level. On a replica the slots sit uneven and the heads stand proud.

Legal position in the United States

Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. Civil claims under the Lanham Act allow statutory damages of up to $2,000,000 for each counterfeit mark, per type of goods, when the use is willful. Import is banned by 19 U.S.C. 1526. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy a shipment, and the agency does not return seized counterfeits to the buyer.

What a replica does not carry

No factory service history. No AP parts. No resale value against a genuine reference. Independent watchmakers often decline repair work on replicas because the components do not interchange with AP parts, and gaskets and crystals do not match factory tolerances.

Checks before you buy any AP

  1. Request a sharp photo of the caseback with the reference and serial in frame.
  2. Request a movement photo with the caseback open.
  3. Ask for the invoice, box, and warranty card, then confirm the serial with Audemars Piguet.
  4. Compare the engraving font against archive photos from auction houses.
  5. Pay for independent authentication before money changes hands.

If you own a watch marked ref 205

AP's heritage department can confirm a serial and reference. A written appraisal from a watchmaker who services AP states whether the movement matches the case. Without that document, treat the watch as unverified. A three-digit reference does not match the formats AP used.
